This wasn't because his folks were bad, per se, but his older brother's a high-level genius with a superiority complex and mild behavioral problems... he needed attention more than Cameron did and Cameron never really demanded any. As a result he came to be aware his parents loved him more in an intellectual, logical way than actually having felt it and, while he's never openly acknowledged it, he's quietly developed a complex around being inferior/invisible. That said he did fairly well as he grew up. When his sister came along he quietly took on a lot of her care duties despite being only five years older and he was one of the few people his brother would even attempt to relate to at all, he got along just fine with both siblings even if he was almost entirely disconnected from both parents. He looked up to Walker in that younger to older brother way and when Walker started to hang around with the 'wrong crowd' Cameron gradually became a tag along, getting into small amounts of trouble that was at first well within the usual teen angst spectrum. He wasn't really aware of it when Walker strayed from rebelling into criminality but when he was fourteen and his brother sixteen Walker got arrested for stealing a car. The owner didn't press charges but their parents came down hard on his brother, who swore blind it was a one off and it wouldn't happen again. About a fortnight later Cameron was taking a shortcut home when he spotted his brother breaking into another car. He confronted him and then and there Walker made it clear that it was none of Cameron's business and he could leave or help and that was the end of it. Realizing his brother was going to continue with the theft either way, and not wanting to get him into trouble, Cameron broke into the car himself and through sheer bad luck turned out to have a natural aptitude for it. As Walker proceeded to go further and further off the rails Cameron found himself more and more often being dragged into it and, over time, being less and less bothered by the fact. As it happened they made an impressive team - Cameron had a knack with gadgets Walker could never have hoped to develop while Cameron, unquestionably smart, could never plot and plan the way his brother could. There were near misses but neither ever actually got busted and both even managed to complete high school, though Walker largely only because he was hugely smart to start off with. Both brothers also got into college though only Cameron graduated - working quietly and using his ill-gotten gains to help with his own tuition where Walker dropped out halfway through Freshman year. He was in his final year when things finally took a huge u-turn. He got back from classes to find their parents out and Walker hanging out with Melissa - in the garage, where he was showing her how to hotwire a car. For some reason that got through to him despite the fact nothing ever had before and he stood up to his brother, telling him to keep their sister out of it. Fists flew, words were exchanged and ultimately Cameron told Walker to do his own break-ins and thefts from now on. Walker was convinced Cam would calm down and rejoin the fold - he didn't. Instead he picked up a job as a TA and another in a local fast food place, staying well away from temptation and focusing hard on making it to graduation and on keeping as much distance between his brother and sister as possible. He'd barely finished his studies when Melissa admitted one of her friends was a regular shoplifter and Cameron, on his sister's request, staged a small-scale intervention. Which worked. He hadn't been sure before about what he wanted to do with his life but after that he enrolled on the first counseling course that would take him, got his diploma and found himself a job in youth counseling. Walker thinks he's being ridiculous and remains convinced that this is all just a phase Cam is going through but as Cam's not yet worked with any of his particular crowd he's largely leaving him be.
